Archbishop Issues Letter Calling for Peace in Middle East

Shalom and blessings,

Our world has been shaken by unspeakable violence in the Holy Land. This terrible violence and hostility resulted in the tragic, unnecessary loss of life, primarily affecting innocent civilians.

On behalf of the Catholic Community in Las Vegas, we extend heartfelt prayers, deepest condolences, and unwavering support to all those who are suffering, those who have lost their loved ones, and those who are living in fear of this horrific violence.

In this moment of darkness, we echo the words of Pope Francis, who, last Saturday, called for unity and peace, saying, "May the attacks and weaponry cease. Please! And let it be understood that terrorism and war do not lead to any resolutions, but only to the death and suffering of so many innocent people.”

In union with our Holy Father, we pray that his call for peace and an end to terrorism will be heeded. We fervently pray for an end to violence and for the restoration of justice and peace in the land that is holy to us all.

We want you to know the request of the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pizzaballa, who called for a day of prayer and fasting on October 17. We will encourage our fellow Catholics and all people of goodwill to join in this act of solidarity, with the hope that our prayers and actions will contribute to the healing and reconciliation needed at this time.

May the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of mercy and compassion, grant solace to the afflicted and courage to peacemakers who the Lord calls blessed, and strength to all those affected by this ongoing violence.
